Researcher Access Program - Researchers can apply for up to $1,000 in OpenAI API credits to study responsible AI deployment, AI risk mitigation, and the societal impact of AI systems.
OpenAI is especially interested in supporting early-stage researchers and those with limited financial or institutional resources. Credits are valid for 12 months and can be used on publicly available OpenAI models.
Eligibility: Researchers in countries supported by the OpenAI API can apply. Applications should focus on relevant research areas such as alignment, fairness, societal impact, misuse potential, human-AI interaction, economic impacts, transfer learning, or multimodal measurements. Approval is not guaranteed.

How to apply
5 steps- Visit openai.com/form/researcher-access-program/ and open the application page.
- Click Apply for API credits to continue to SurveyMonkey Apply.
- Create an account on the application platform if needed.
- Submit your research question and explain how you plan to use OpenAI products in the project.
- Wait for the quarterly review cycle. Applications are reviewed every 3 months and awarded credits typically take 4 to 6 weeks to be issued after a decision.
